Notes related to the page of
Castle Inn and surroundings

Note written by Peter Griffith and edited by
  Geoff.
Here are twelve photos from Irene Webb's
collection.  Eleven are of Little Wakering and one is of Great Wakering.
(You will find the Great Wakering picture in the Great Wakering session.)

Most of the images are taken from postcards made
early in the C20. Sadly, none have precise dates on, though you can see that
some are later than others from changes in the buildings. For instance, the
one of The Castle with a wooden frontage is obviously before the brick version
that we all know. Apparently, the interior stayed the same after the facelift.

The first group are of The Castle. Irene's
grandfather - her mother's father - was the landlord there from about 1882 to
1927. He appears on some of the pictures.
  Added 24 March 2002.
A further photo has been added, provided by Michael Prior, that seems to be
one of the earliest, if not the earliest. This photo will be found in the
bottom row, next to the Church.
